This is an executive director position on the board of this privately owned electronics manufacturer. My client is looking for a technical director to replace the incumbent who is retiring in the second half of 2018. The position has a pivotal role in shaping their technology roadmap and guiding its implementation as well as delivering the product roadmap.
The technical director will bring pragmatism and an understanding of technical opportunities and constraints to board meetings and decisions; will inspire engineering staff to create long term value by pursuing an ambitious technology roadmap; will drive through initiatives to develop and strengthen the engineering area; will be accountable to the board for technical performance (technical research, product development, customisation and support).
The technical director will join three other executive directors (managing director, commercial director and financial director) on the board, alongside two non-executive directors (including the chairman). The technical director will report to the managing director.
The technical director will be responsible for managing the engineering area. As department manager, the technical director will be a member of the management team, which has responsibility for the day-to-day running and for the operational performance of the business; and will work with other department managers to monitor performance, progress projects and improve processes.
As department manager, the technical director will have overall responsibility for the organisation and performance of the engineering area, which combines R&D (algorithms, software and electronics), support and application engineering. As such the technical director will have line management responsibilities for the team leaders within the engineering area.
2. Candidate Profile
You will have at least ten years’ experience of working with sophisticated electronic equipment and have held board level responsibility for at least two years. Your experience will include developing products from new technology and GUI software development. You will be a consummate, hands-on project manager who leads by example and works effectively at all levels in a matrix organisation.
You must have the right to work permanently within the UK. No visa sponsorship is offered.
In addition to a highly competitive base salary and 27 days’ annual leave, performance related bonuses will add up to 50% of salary. A pension will be offered after three months as well as permanent health insurance that provides 75% of salary for up to five years in the case of long term sick leave.

Their customers are predominantly international and include engineering departments of Ford, General Motors, Jaguar Land River, BMW, Mercedes, and Volvo. They have a staff of around 65 people and a very healthy order book.
